“Even if we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)
Our Heavenly Father pursues us with relentless love and mercy. Throughout the Scriptures whenever, God’s people would break His covenant and stray from Him, He would raise up His prophets from the righteous remnant to call the people to repentance to return to Him. This is a Biblical pattern throughout Scripture: falling away from God (apostasy); consequences of judgment; and a righteous remnant that would call the people to repentance leading to revival, healing, & restoration.
In 1 Kings 18-19 we are told of a time of great apostasy under the wicked rulers King Ahab & Queen Jezebel. Judgment falls upon the nation as no rain falls for three years which results in a great famine. Elijah the prophet is raised up out of a remnant of 7,000 to call the people to repentance. Great revival & reform begin when the wicked rulers and priests of Baal are dethroned and righteousness is exalted in the nation once again. The drought is broken and rains of mercy and refreshing are sent by the Lord (similar to the concept of the blessings of the Latter rains spoken of in Joel).
The concept of the faithful remnant still continues today not merely as an Old Testament principle but it is also spoken of by the Apostle Paul in Romans 11:5-6 in the context of the remnant in Elijah’s time: “So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were grace would no longer be grace.” In the New Covenant there is a remnant based upon the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord.
This remnant is a counter-culture revolutionary movement of believers who serve as a catalyst for revival in our church and in our nation. Its army marches under the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit proclaiming the Gospel and promoting a Biblical worldview that will impact our society and influence culture. We as that faithful remnant of believers are the “salt & light” that will transform not only our local communities but also the nations.
Yet, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him. (1 Kings 19:18)
